• Puttin' on The Ritz!

Part of the Big Birthday celebration for my lovely man included a night at The Ritz (well you’re only ‘that old’ once!). It was wonderful to be in such glamorous surroundings and to be attended to by courteous, smiling staff throughout the whole of our stay. It really was top class (especially the newly discovered chilled oats for breakfast, yum!)

Being a Royal lookalike is very much about context so needless to say, The Ritz was great fun as heads were turning in our direction throughout our stay! I was somewhat surprised when a member of the reception team couldn’t resist saying, “You’re so much like Camilla it’s SCARY!” (I’m sure I should have an appropriate retort to such comments but wasn’t quite fast enough on this occasion!)

Our taxi driver was somewhat amused and a lady at The Tower gave me a huge smile and a wave! However, the absolute gem was during our visit to The Portrait Restaurant at the National Portrait Gallery. We’d had some fun looking at portraits of Charles and Kate and The Queen before heading for the rooftop restaurant to take our table for lunch. (If you haven’t been the views are wonderful. I always imagine Mary Poppins and Bert doing their rooftop dance through the chimney-pots!)

As the table wasn’t quite ready our waitress asked us to take a seat. I was immediately ‘spotted’ by a man who very quickly turned to his wife who then had a good ogle at me. They had a bit of a conflab and then both turned to have another gawp. Clearly my husband’s presence was confusing them. As the waitress came over to tell us that our table was ready the lady took her by the arm and whispered something in her ear, nodding her head in my direction. At this point the waitress, having had a look at me herself, then went back to the reception desk and was clearly checking my name on the booking list! I was tempted to lean over and say, “Sorry to disappoint you!” or maybe I should have said, “It’s the only way one can get a day out in peace!” and leave her to wonder.

All in all it was a fun time and an eye –opener for my dear husband who is now perfecting his body-guard impression ready for our next visit!
